Because we are all human, and sometimes we need mechanisms that protect us from human nature – the part of us that can lead us to choose the easy, but wrong, path. The path that takes us to the end of the street: a grade on an exam, but undermines our ability to reach the end of the journey: gaining knowledge and developing independent, innovative, complex, and critical thinking and writing skills.
ISO ACADEMIA was designed to protect students from the highly tempting opportunity to take the wrong path when writing academic papers in the age of artificial intelligence.
Our approach is based on the same principle as examination proctoring – prevention rather than action after the fact – through the following principles:
Deterrence – the paper is written within the academic institution’s own work environment, rather than in an unsupervised environment such as Word or Google Docs.
Preventing access to “high-risk areas” – eliminating the ability to use inauthentic bibliographic sources or sources that are inaccessible for reading, and identifying and marking content that has been copied and pasted into the paper.
Holding students accountable for documenting the writing process – providing access to the dialogue (chat) they conducted with AI tools during the writing process, and identifying the exact content in the bibliographic sources on which they relied.
